Case studies are a means for providing you with an opportunity to apply theories and principles in a simulated organizational setting.  The case narrative establishes the setting for the analysis and may or may not provide explicit questions for response.

Sometimes, instructors use cases without explicit questions to assess the student’s ability to diagnose the problems or issues existing in the organization as well as formulate solutions to address these problems/issues.

What does it take to analyze a case successfully?

You must read the case thoroughly – and, perhaps, several times so that you truly comprehend what is going on in the case and what the major issues and problems are. The first time through, look for the forest.  Each subsequent reading should reveal more detail about the trees.  In other words, get a sense of the situation, issues, problems, etc. early on.  Then, identify specific issues for further examination.

You must display personal initiative. You must figure out what is going on in the case on your own.  You must relate prior learning or research to the case situation and apply it to the best of your ability.  This is hard work and requires significant investment of your time.  You cannot expect to read, understand, and analyze a case at the last minute.  Spread out the work so that you have adequate time to fully consider the situation and your actions.

Use a disciplined approach.  While it will not apply to all case analyses, the problem-solving method is a good place to start.  The problem-solving method consists of 5 steps:

1. Define the problem(s) and issue(s)
2. Identify the cause(s) of the problem(s)/issue(s)
3. Develop alternative approaches for addressing the problem(s)/issue(s)
4. Select the best approach(s)
5. Provide sound rationale for your choice(s). Support your recommendations and conclusions.

If specific questions are posed, provide a response that addresses the questions in a concise, but comprehensive manner. Cite evidence from the case or your readings and research to support your assertions. However, do not simply repeat the case (see item 5 below).

Finally, a case assignment requires ANALYSIS; DO NOT SIMPLY DESCRIBE what is going on. However, facts from the case may serve as evidence to support your conclusions. Write up your analysis in an organized, logical format. Link relevant points together.  If questions are asked, address them specifically. Be clear in what you say: What, exactly, are the problems, strengths, weaknesses, etc.? What are the causes of the problems (draw on what you have learned or researched)? What do you recommend should be done (based on what you have learned or researched)? Who, specifically, should do what?  Why should it be done?  Avoid generalizations and clichés.  Employ the elements of a sound argument: theory, facts, logic, and evidence.

Proofread your submission for proper grammar. At a minimum, use the spelling and grammar check under the “Review” tab in WORD. Good ideas are often overlooked or ignored if not communicated in a professional manner.
